The concept of Arcus started with some wooden patterns that were saved from The Caldwell Tank Company, located in Newnan, Georgia. These wooden patterns, which were used for casting metal parts, are prized artifacts which exhibit the superior craftsmanship of the manufacturing industry in the past century. The patterns were used as inspiraton for the sculpture. I selected several interesting shapes and pieces to act as a muse for my composition; the strongest of which was a large wooden gear which I translated into the gear component that you see in the sculpture. It is not meant to be an exact copy, but a point of inspiration for the piece. With the arched gear acting as an anchor for the work, I addressed the opportunity of incorporating some of the aluminum from Bonnell Aluminum.

My intent was to create a dichotomy between structural and organic ideas. I sliced the 9” diameter aluminum column into thin slices and created an organic, cloud like form that would seemingly pass through or around a structural form. Through careful curation of shape and color, I composed the pieces in a way that the aluminum cloud appears to float past or through steel structure.

Betelgeuse is named after the tenth brightest star in the night sky and is meant to embrace the idea that all matter in the universe, including our very flesh, is continuously recycled; we are born from stars and our dust will eventually make it back there.

Salvaged bridge components, board formed concrete

The sculpture is composed of 120 year old steel from the historic Rogers Bridge and is meant to represent the water as it embraces the bridge column. This constant and boundless interaction between earth and water brings the river to life. The sculpture is also a literal passageway. It is a symbol that represents the connection between two places; the driving force for the restoration of the new bridge and the partnership of the communities it connects. This composition is anchored through two massive cast concrete columns which were inspired by many of the stone and concrete bridge columns along the Chattahoochee River.

Convergence is a term describing the act of two or more things that come together to form a new whole, the word comes from the prefix con-, meaning together, and the verb verge, which means to turn toward. I think the term convergence accurately describes the sculpture in a literal sense; but more interestingly, perhaps, is the metaphorical potential of the term as a symbol of the evolution of ideas and people moving toward a more unified existence.

Ethos describes the fundamental character or spirit of a culture; the underlying sentiment that informs the beliefs, customs or practices of a group or society.

Ethos represents the heart of downtown Atlanta. The embracing lines of the sculpture suggest that the character of the city is of love and unity.

BCR-ABL1 monumental double helix hangs in space; giving us a surreal closeup view of the spiraling composition of a DNA strand.    The planar surfaces of the sculpture are encoded with the sequences of the BCR and ABL1 codes. The translocation of these chromosomes creates an abnormality known as the Philadelphia Gene.

Kite Migration is a sculptural form that implies an existing geometric structure in the migratory patterns of the Split Tail Kite. The Artist suggests that, even in the most organic movements and behaviors in nature, there is an underlying geometry; an intentional composition.

The Cloud is an interactive sculpture that incorporates LED light tubes inside a circular geometric form also known as a torus. The lighting element is activated by the viewer as they interrupt the infrared sensors with their hands or bodies via a control console. The torus itself is suspended overhead like a cloud. The lights, flash in synchronicity to the viewer interactions, reference lightning bolts within the cloud and serve as illumination for the area.

This collection of 8 steel fabricated goats symbolizes the concept of awareness. All too often we find ourselves immersed in work, worry or just the everyday tasks of life and our awareness of self and our place is clouded. There is one goat that raises his head up to sense his surroundings. As he does, he sees all the other goats with their heads buried. He experiences the beauty of his surrounding while the others only see what’s right in front of their nose. This analogy of life is familiar to all.

Spiderwalk is an interactive climbable sculpture in the form of a playful, stylized spider.  The much larger than life insect is intended to create an environment for children of all ages to climb, occupy and be enveloped in.  The piece incorporates climbing web ladders and a play environment underneath the belly of the sculpture.

Iron Canopy is a kinetic sculpture and is part of a group of sculptures whose subject matter is derived from the magic of trees. This work recognizes the idea that life supports life; in this case the tree is a habitat for a great owl.

This project was a collaboration with world champion body painters Scott Fray and Madelyn Greco.

As I developed the composition for this piece I wanted to conceptually tie in all of the aspects of history and time as they affect and reflect the community.  The tree form metaphorically represents the deeply rooted history of the community and its citizens.  Meanwhile, the polished park shaped wind sail reflects the bright future for the park and the neighborhood.  The stone physically and metaphorically acts as a counterweight to balance the historical significance of the community with its progressive growth and future.

Commissioned by North Carolina Veterans Memorial Park.  This public sculpture commission honors military commitment and utilizes recycled military materials.

The concept of Commitment is symbolically represented through the relationship between the stone and the steel beams. The massive reinforced beams represent the unwavering commitment of our military forces in their support of our country and its citizens. The stone is representative of our country while the stainless fasteners suggest that the two entities are bound in permanence.
